Olive Trees

All of our olives are sourced from Northern Spain only. We try only to use Arbequina and Manzanilla varieties (see below). We stock a range of olives from 2 yr plants to 100 yr specimens. We offer many shapes including pyramid, 3 tier, Pompon and natural. We have access to a large database of olive specimens, of exceptional quality and size. Our Olives are hardy to at least -12˚C maybe more when correctly planted and sited.

Secrets of Success

1. Mature specimens are tougher than young plants.
2. Try to select a cold tolerant variety.
3. Choose a site with protection from west winds.
4. Try to plant on a bank or free draining site.
5. Plant raised above the ground.
6. Improve soil drainage with sand and compost.
7. Ensure adequate water and fertilizer to improve Summer harvest.
8. Plant in full sun if possible.

"Arbequina"

One of the smaller Olive trees, mature at only 4 m high. The earliest to bear fruit, usually at only 3 years old. Largely considered to be the most cold tolerant variety, but also adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions. Possibly the most tolerant of poor soils. The No. 1 tree in Northern Spain, highly prized for both its olive oil and table fruits. The small fruits eventually turn purple but are often picked early and prepared when still green. There are an estimated 50,000 ha of Arbequina growing in Spain.

"Manzanillo"

Another cold hardy olive, but is more sensitive to late frosts (in April) and early frosts, both of which can damage the fruit. Ranked as the worlds no 1 table olive. Will withstand very low winter temperatures as well as very high summer temperatures. Fruit matures to purple in October or early November but can be harvested in late September (when still green), to avoid frost damage.

We can deliver and plant all the trees in our catalogue – the cost of which depends on the size of the tree and the distance for delivery. All of the larger olives come with an all inclusive price for delivery and planting within a radius of 30km to Bolougne sur Gesse – price for delivery and planting outside this limit is available on application.
